"Carcieri irked by Underdog takeover of State House"

Governor Carcieri hasn't been too pleased with the way the crew of Disney's film Underdog has essentially taken over the State House for most of the month(July).

In particular, the governor was upset with the recent flying of the fictional Capitol City flag over the State House instead of the Rhode Island flag.

"I don't think it was appropriate at all. This is the state capitol. And the U.S. flag is up there and the state flag and that's what should be up there," Carcieri said the other day. "When I saw that, I said 'take it down and put the Rhode Island flag up.' That's why it's back up. That shouldn't have happened."

But it's not just the flag that irked Carcieri. Crews have blocked off the main entrance, closed the rotunda and taken down a historic chandelier. The frequent summer visitors to the State House have disappeared, and employees dodge film equipment daily.

"I'm supportive of the filming that we're doing, but I think in the future what we do inside this building, I want to look at a lot more closely," Carcieri said. "This is no aspersion on the team, the filming people, the crews have been terrific. But in my own judgment, we should not be dismantling the State House to allow filming."

Todd Arnow , executive producer of the film, said through a spokesman: "We respect the governor's feelings and appreciate the widespread support and cooperation our film has received in Rhode Island."

Fogarty filming on Smith Hill

Speaking of movies, Lt. Gov. Charles J. Fogarty has been doing a little State House filming of his own.

The Democrat, who is challenging Republican Carcieri in November, spent two days earlier this month filming footage for some television ads, according to his campaign spokesman, Adam Bozzi.

When asked to describe the ad's content, Bozzi just said: "Why Charlie Fogarty should be governor."

"That's about as specific as I can get for you," Bozzi said.

The ads were shown in Providence and Pawtucket and included scenes of the State House lawn, Fogarty's office and some hallway shots.
